NHS encourages patients to take part in the 2019 GP Patient Survey
From this week, more than two million people are being sent an invite to take part in the GP Patient Survey and the NHS is encouraging every invitee to share their experiences of using services at the GP practice they are registered with.
The survey provides detailed information about the range of ways people interact with primary care staff and how good that experience is. It plays a key role in understanding what’s working and what needs to improve. The survey invites a sample of people aged 16 and over from over 7000 practices across England to take part. They can complete it – by post or online – until the end of March and there is a range of options to make it more inclusive for people who need support to help them take part.
It is also a key source of information for understanding the impact of recent changes introduced in primary care, such as extended opening hours and other initiatives, which were carried out in response to what patients said in previous years’ surveys.
Those who are randomly selected to take part will receive a letter over the next few weeks, along with a questionnaire. Their information will be handled securely and no-one will be identified when the findings are published.
Olivia Falgayrac-Jones, Director of Commissioning at NHS England for Hampshire and the Thames Valley said: “If you get a survey in January, please take part as it provides vital information to help improve local services and inform national decisions. You can help by encouraging other people you know to complete it, if they’re invited. It is important for GP practices and for the wider NHS to find out what is working well and what needs improvement, so we can ensure that services keep getting better and are meeting the needs of patients.”
The questionnaire asks not just about the care provided by GPs, but also about seeing other healthcare professionals such as on-site pharmacists, mental health specialists and practice nurses. It aims to find out more about people’s experiences of using online services, telephone services and face-to-face appointments. Finally, it also looks at how much support people get with managing long-term conditions and medication.
Patients who are not invited to take part in this year’s survey can still provide useful feedback to their GP practice teams by filling in a Friends and Family Test (FFT) form at their practice any time. It is open to everyone, and every practice is involved. More than 1.2 million pieces of feedback on NHS-funded services are given this way every month and they help to continuously improve and take the pulse of healthcare across England, with nine in 10 patients who give feedback rating their experience positively.

We are pleased to advise that Dr Laura Hamilton-Grey has joined our surgery as an associate GP. She has worked as a locum with us since the beginning of the year and her addition strengthens our already strong GP team. She will be an asset to the practice.
As a result of the appointment, please be advised that a number of patients will be re-allocated to Dr Hamilton-Grey as their named GP, but as always patients can access medical service provided by any GP at the surgery.
Improving Access to General Practice Services
We are working to improve access to appointments for our patients, in particular at evenings and weekends. If you would like to be offered one of these appointments, please ask. These appointments may be at a different site such as Royal Bournemouth Hospital

In June 2019 there were 150 appointments where patients didn’t turn up. If you book an appointment and are unable to attend – please contact us via phone or text to cancel the appointment so that we can give it to somebody else. Now live with Electronic Prescriptions Service (EPS)
On Thursday 25 February 2016 Kinson Road Medical Centre went live with a new prescriptions service that will benefit patients by saving time and providing a choice of pharmacy of where to collect medications.
Instead of coming to the Doctors Surgery, patients who have repeat prescriptions will now be able to collect them direct from their choice of chemist. Patients will no longer need to come and collect the green paper prescriptions. Patients will have more choice about where to get their medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where they live, work or shop.

Information for patients...Care.Data Programme
The Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) can now use patients' personal data (NHS number, date of birth, postcode and gender but not your name) and some clinical data (e.g. referrals, diagnoses, vaccinations, family history, blood pressure etc.) stored in your medical records in order to plan and improve health services for all patients. This information, which does not reveal your identity, can then be used by others, such as reseachers and those planning health services, to help provide the best care for everyone.
How your information is used and shared is controlled by law and strict rules are in place to protect your privacy.
You need to know that this is happening and what choices you have. If you do not want your information to be shared outside your GP practice or if you are happy for the information to go to HSCIC but do not want it or any other information held by hospitals and community services to leave the HSCIC then you need to complete the opt-out form (link below) and hand this in at the surgery. We will then code your medical records to prevent the release of such information. From 1 April 2017 the shingles vaccine is being offered to:
- Patients as soon as they reach the age of 70
- Patients as soon as they reach the age of 78
In addition, patients who were eligible for immunisation in the first four years of the programme but have not been vaccinated against shingles remain eligible until their 80th birthday. These cohorts are:
- Patients aged 71, 72, 73 and 74 on 1 September 2016; and
- Patients aged 79 on 1 September 2016 and under 80.
